Bendera Malaysia bukan ditiru dari bendera USA. Ia adalah satu sejarah panjang yang bermula sejak zaman kegemilangan kerajaan Melayu Tua Srivijaya. Bendera ini kemudian dipakai oleh kebanyakan kerajaan selepasnya sehinggalah ke zaman Majapahit yang menjadi kebanggaan Indonesia. Sesiapapun boleh faham mengapa Indonesia mengagungkan Majapahit.
